Huddersfield’s New Square Opens to the Sound of Local Music — and It’s FREE All Weekend
Huddersfield’s newest public square is getting a suitably local soundtrack this weekend, with two days of free live music helping launch Queensgate Square and the new Library Hub. On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, local performers will take centre stage as the town celebrates a new place to meet, explore and enjoy music together.
A brand-new square, a proper Huddersfield soundtrack
The Library Hub opened on Monday 21 September as part of the Our Cultural Heart project. Now it’s the square’s turn: the opening weekend brings music, creative workshops, family activities, food and drink into the heart of town. Saturday’s outdoor programme runs from noon until 5pm, with celebrations continuing on Sunday. Admission is free.
Saturday: indie roots, Django swing and big brass
Saturday’s confirmed Kirklees Most Wanted artists are Eve Jone, Al’s Django Party and Deadbeat Brass. That means a line-up moving from melodic songwriting to lively Django-inspired swing and a full-throttle brass sound. Whether you’re planning a whole afternoon or simply passing through town, it’s a chance to discover musicians working on our doorstep.
Sunday: songs to slow down for
Leo Brazil and Hannah Rowe are among Sunday’s confirmed artists, bringing alt-folk, soul and acoustic songwriting to the new square. The wider opening-weekend programme also includes Wolfe Trap, JULË, Ramshackle Orchestra and Wadcutter Blues; check the organisers’ latest programme for individual set times rather than guessing when your favourite act will appear.
Why this matters for local music
New spaces are great, but what makes them come alive is the people who use them. Giving local artists a stage at the opening is a welcome opportunity for the musicians and audiences who keep Huddersfield’s scene moving. The Kirklees Most Wanted project, spearheaded by The Saving Grace Collective, has helped champion home-grown artists and connect them with live opportunities. This weekend puts some of that talent right in the town centre.
Make a day of it
The Library Hub opens from 9.30am on Saturday, with activities including Lego Club, Chess Club, a family trail and Makerspace demonstrations. Outside, Queensgate Square will have music, workshops, games and food. The celebrations continue on Sunday, so there are two opportunities to get involved.
Monkey GigsList has been Helping To Keep Local Music Alive Since 2014. If you’re heading into town, stop and listen, support the performers and help give Huddersfield’s newest square a memorable first weekend.
