Huddersfield Live Music This Weekend: Seven Reasons to Get Off the Sofa

If your weekend plan currently consists of ‘see what happens’, Huddersfield and the surrounding valleys have already answered the question: go and see some live music. From gloriously odd post-punk to Metallica-sized riffs, Thin Lizzy classics and a free Sunday afternoon session, there is plenty happening from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September.

Friday night: choose your flavour of strange or classic

AMPED starts the weekend with Erotic Secrets of Pompeii, joined by Peer Pleasure and Lomens on Friday 18 September. Doors are advertised for 7.30pm. If you like your live music theatrical, angular and a little difficult to explain to your neighbours afterwards, this is the one to investigate.

Over at Parish, The Sensational Alex Harvey Experience are also in town on Friday evening, bringing the songs and spirit of the legendary Scottish rock outfit to Huddersfield.

Saturday: riffs, Lizzy and a trip to Marsden

Saturday 19 September gives rock fans a proper choice. Metal Militia bring their Metallica tribute show to Parish, with the venue advertising a 7.30pm start. Down the Holme Valley, Limehouse Lizzy return to Holmfirth Picturedrome for another celebration of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy’s catalogue.

For something completely different, Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip are at Marsden Mechanics on Saturday night. Their live shows have built a reputation around songs, stories, surreal humour and the sort of audience interaction that means no two nights are quite the same.

And over in Brighouse, Into The Groove bring a live-band mix of soul, funk and old-school favourites to Brighouse Civic Hall LIVE, with doors advertised from 7pm.

Sunday School is in session

Parish keeps the weekend rolling on Sunday 20 September with Sunday School featuring Elastic Waste and Adelaide Taylor. The venue lists the afternoon session from 3pm — a very civilised way to squeeze one more live show out of the weekend before Monday arrives.

Monkey’s pick

There is no single ‘right’ gig this weekend, which is exactly the point. Huddersfield’s live scene works because a Friday-night post-punk bill, a Saturday Metallica tribute, a Holmfirth classic-rock show and a Sunday afternoon local session can all exist within a few miles of each other. Pick one, buy a drink, watch the support acts and help keep the rooms that put live music on busy.

As ever, check with the venue or ticket seller before travelling in case of late changes. And if your band or venue has a gig that Monkey has missed, get it onto the GigsList — helping to keep local music alive since 2014.
